Maslenitsa is one of the most colorful holidays, which is very popular in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus. The essence of the celebration lies in the farewell to winter and the welcome of spring, as well as in preparation for Lent. Where will Maslenitsa be held this year, and how did the main traditions of this holiday originate? Read on.

Celebration history

The Maslenitsa holiday appeared even among the ancient Slavs as a custom to guide winter and welcome spring. Many scholars believe that this celebration was held exclusively in the spring and implied a special ceremony aimed at increasing the amount of the harvest. However, the number winter fun, inherent in the celebration, confirms that Shrovetide was a winter holiday, celebrated at the very end of February-early March, when there was still snow everywhere.

It is impossible to establish exactly when the celebration of Shrovetide began, since even the oldest sources mention a certain celebration that took place during the period of the spring equinox. In many European countries during this period, carnivals were held, designed to see off the winter and meet the spring. However, in Russia, such traditions were transformed, and after that they even acquired a religious connotation. What are the main attributes, having studied the origin of the holiday, can you name? This:

  1. Scarecrow of Maslenitsa, with the help of which people see off the winter.
  2. Folk festivities, often associated with winter fun.
  3. Pancakes and flatbreads, which have long been the epitome of celebration.

Shrovetide history has always been directly associated with the burning of the so-called effigy. Sometimes the scarecrow itself is performed purely schematically, but almost always it has features female body... Scientists believe that this figure was the personification of the fertility of the earth. Burning a scarecrow, simple peasants many centuries ago prayed for a successful harvest, hoping for the fertility of the land.

Another symbol of the holiday is pancakes. Now there are several dozen recipes for festive pancakes, but those that were cooked with kefir or milk are considered traditional.

Despite the fact that the history of the emergence of Shrovetide is not known for certain to modern researchers, it is clear for sure that this celebration originated even before the formation of Orthodoxy. After the adoption of Christianity, when pagan beliefs began to transform, the holiday acquired new, religious features.

Celebration date

It is impossible to tell a story about the Shrovetide holiday without mentioning the dates of the celebrations. Traditionally, in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus, this holiday takes place a week before the beginning of Lent and is directly related to the date of the Easter holiday.

Actually, the inconstancy of the date of the celebration is main feature this formerly pagan, and now Orthodox holiday... Many centuries ago, when Shrovetide was just in its infancy, the main celebrations were directly timed to date Spring equinox... Now the celebration is directly associated with Orthodox traditions and beliefs. It is believed that a week before Lent, people should start organizing festivities, delighting themselves with a variety of treats and traditional pancakes.

In 2017, the celebration date for this celebration fell on the week from March 7th to 13th. On the last day of Shrovetide, the most cheerful and loud festivities take place, and it is on this day that a huge scarecrow is burned.

For last day Maslenitsa week has its own customs, and here are just a few of them:

  • on this day, it is customary to ask for forgiveness from all friends and relatives (therefore, the day was called Forgiveness Sunday);
  • the so-called "rite of forgiveness" and a festive service are held in churches;
  • there is also a tradition of going to the bathhouse to wash off the remnants of sinfulness before the beginning of Great Lent;
  • it was during this period throughout the country that the stuffed animals of the Shrovetide were burned and the loudest festivities were held.

Of course, some of the ancient customs have long been transformed or disappeared altogether, but many people continue to take Shrovetide celebrations quite seriously.

Where is the celebration taking place?

Where the Maslenitsa holiday will be is a question that is regularly asked by the younger generation. In Russia, it is very stormy, one might say, wide leg celebrate Shrovetide week. That is why extensive festivities begin on the very first day (that is, March 7 this year), and continue until Sunday.

Shrovetide traditions are quite extensive, so each day of the festive week has its own nuances. How does this walk through the day go?

Of course now folk holiday slightly transformed. Many rituals have become a thing of the past, and people prefer to celebrate only the last day of the Shrovetide week, all the same with chic festivities.

The question of where Shrovetide is celebrated does not have an unambiguous answer. The fact is that this celebration is popular in many CIS countries, and it is especially in demand in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus.

Traditionally, this religious celebration is celebrated on a grand scale in the main squares of the city, and some government agencies, institutes and schools organize their events next to educational institutions.

The party begins on Sunday or Saturday in the morning and continues until midday, and ends with the burning of the effigy. Throughout the holiday, guests feast on pancakes and other treats, have fun riding a sleigh and playing snowballs.

Shrovetide effigy and its history

Traditions of celebrating Maslenitsa in all ages implied the burning of a special huge effigy. It was carried out from straw, hay and sometimes withered foliage. Now in some cities people transform the ceremony, making the famous symbol of the holiday from wood or paper. The main thing is that the material from which the symbol of the holiday is made burns out well.

Now the scarecrow is also burned on the last day of the celebration, after which the period of Great Lent begins with its many restrictions.

Carnival festivities

It is today Maslenitsa traditions have practically sunk into oblivion, and the only thing that contemporaries know about the holiday is that they need to burn a scarecrow and eat pancakes. In fact, the ceremonies and customs of the celebration are very extensive.

So, for example, on the very first day of the celebrations, it was customary to arrange various booths, performances and fairs. In such places, fistfights and various winter fun... People could go sledding, play snowballs, and mold a snow woman.

On the same day, everyone began to construct the Maslenitsa effigy, which was burned on Sunday. Having built a festive scarecrow, they threw it on a sleigh, after which the whole family went for a drive around the city. This ritual could be repeated every day for a week.

Especially large-scale
festivities were held on Thursday, because it was not for nothing that this day bore the telling name "revelry". At first, people went to participate in noisy parties and fist fights, then they rode horses, and the celebration ended with a large-scale capture of a snow town.

Everywhere on this day, bonfires were made, ritual jumping over the fire took place. It was believed that jumping over fire, a person purifies his soul on the eve of major religious holidays.

The celebrations were held on Sunday in approximately the same way. People were actively having fun, burning stuffed animals and could walk until late in the evening. After the burning of the effigy of Shrovetide, the celebration was considered officially over, and people went home. On this day unmarried girls could conduct fortune telling on the betrothed. After the evening festivities, it was time for a long fast.

Many researchers believe that with the help of such large-scale festivities, people tried to prepare themselves for further long-term restrictions.

The role of pancakes in the celebration of Shrovetide

The Maslenitsa holiday is characterized by a wide variety of customs, but perhaps the most popular of them is the production of various pancakes. This treat has long become a symbol of celebration, and now there are several dozen recipes for a festive treat. Here are just the most known species Shrovetide delicacies:

There is a version that this treat was the personification of the sun because of its shape. Also, this symbol of the upcoming holiday was of a memorial nature. Shrovetide itself has a clear memorial meaning. So, for example, during this period many centuries ago it was necessary to visit the cemetery, remember the deceased relatives and eat abundantly at various feasts. Pancakes were also one of the main dishes at any commemoration. With their help, the ancient Slavs saw off and commemorated the winter, as well as all deceased relatives.

When the last day of all celebrations approached, it was customary to burn the remnants of holiday treats, as a symbol of the bygone season. There was a popular belief among the people that the pancakes left in the house after the end of Maslenitsa could bring misfortune.

There is this
treats could have been with anything. For example, housewives prepared pancakes stuffed with caviar, berries and fruits. The treat itself was often eaten with sour cream and jam.

There were also traditions regarding who should prepare a festive meal. For example, on Wednesday, on the third day of the celebration, the mother-in-law was responsible for making pancakes, to whom the son-in-law and all his relatives came. On the very first day of the celebrations, the main meal was prepared in all homes, without exception.

According to the history of the holiday and its traditions, the hostess had to give the first pancake to the poor, showing her kindness and cordiality. In general, it was considered very good sign Show kindness during the Maslenitsa season. This is why people often shared festive table with the poor, distributed treats throughout the week, trying to cleanse their souls.

Celebration rituals and traditions are imperceptibly transformed to this day, and despite the popularity of the celebration, modern people they don't know much about him. Celebrating the national holiday on a grand scale, believers see off last year, winter and meet spring.

And let the ritual ceremonies lose their relevance more and more, this celebration with its bizarre fusion of Orthodox and pagan customs, it seems, will never disappear and will not become an echo of history.

The junction of two sticks or poles is tightly tied with a rope or wire. The long pole will stand upright and act as the torso, and the shorter one, which is parallel to the ground, will act as the arms.
  • Then you need to shape the doll's body from hay.... Attach the straw to the sticks so that you have the shape of your arms, head, and torso. You can attach the hay to the base with ropes or long strips of fabric.
  • Then start creating the face.... There are two options for making a face for a stuffed Maslenitsa with your own hands. In the first option, you can simply attach pieces of fabric that resemble eyes, nose, lips to the straw face, if you originally formed a head from straw on the pole. And in the second, more popular case, you must first fill a bag of light natural fabric, tie or sew up tightly at the bottom. And after that, attach the head - that is, you can simply put it on the pole with a hole in the bag. Date and start of Maslenitsa 2017

What date Maslenitsa begins in 2017 is a question of interest to many. In 2017 Maslenitsa week will last from February 20 to February 26, foreshadowing the coming Great Lent.

Originally, this holiday was pagan, carrying three components: honoring the arrival of spring in the hope of a fertile year, introducing young people to create families and procreation and tribute to the ancestors, who after death ended up not only in the afterlife, but also in the body of the earth , have become part of nature, which means that they also affect the harvest, and therefore, on life.

Shrovetide traditions

They began to celebrate Maslenitsa and prepare for it in two days - they baked pancakes (and the first pancake was always given to the beggars), the children collected sandals in the yards. With them, the guys ran up to passers-by and asked if they were taking Maslenitsa. If the answer was no, then the kids beat the poor fellow with bast shoes.

Shrovetide week began with a small Shrovetide lasting three days. These days they continued to work, prepared a lot of food (pancakes, pies, flat cakes, dumplings, cheesecakes), and began to build a snow town. In the first three days, the groom's family came to visit the bride's family for acquaintance and matchmaking.

Wide Shrovetide in 2017- these are the last four days of the holiday. It began with Revelry - Shrove Tuesday, all the chores were completed, general fun began: fistfights, sleigh rides, competitions, common tables were arranged, where food was brought and everyone who did it was treated. The favorite pastime of the Slavs was jumping over the fire. Shrovetide songs were heard everywhere, accompanied by carols.

Shrovetide ended with the celebration of the ancestors. Women went to the cemetery, brought pancakes and vodka to the graves, begged for forgiveness. The houses continued to eat holiday dishes However, they did not clean the dishes after themselves, on the contrary, they took out all the leftovers of food and left them on the table so that when everyone fell asleep at night, the ancestors could come out from behind the stove and also eat.

Last day of Maslenitsa

On the very last day of Maslenitsa (this is February 26), a straw effigy was burned, personifying winter and last year's dried up harvest. Ashes from Shrovetide were scattered across the fields. Shrovetide ended with cleaning: they cleaned all the dishes, burned food leftovers, left nothing on new day... The time of Great Lent was coming for the believers.
